Exposure

Exposure is the overall brightness of an image: how much light the sensor captured. Raise it and the whole picture brightens together; lower it and everything dims together. Too little exposure buries detail in black; too much blows highlights out to featureless white. Setting exposure — usually anchoring a face at a sensible brightness — is the first move in a balance.
