Rec.2020 / Rec.2100

Rec.2020 is a very wide gamut — a large triangle on the CIE diagram, much bigger than Rec.709 or P3. Rec.2100 is the HDR standard that pairs that Rec.2020 gamut with a PQ or HLG transfer function at 10- or 12-bit — the container almost all HDR is delivered in. The practical nuance: no display can actually fill Rec.2020, so masters are graded P3-D65-limited — colors kept inside the achievable P3 gamut, encoded in a Rec.2020 container. A spec that reads “P3-D65 limited, PQ, 1000 nits, Rec.2020 container” is telling you the gamut you can use, the transfer function, the brightness target, and the container — all at once.
